How to Use Return Policy Generator
- 1Describe your business — what you sell, how you ship, and any conditions you need to state.
- 2Pick the business type: General Retail, Clothing & Fashion, Electronics, Handmade / Custom, Digital Products, or Food & Consumables.
- 3Choose a return window: 14, 30, 60 or 90 days.
- 4Add the business name and generate.
- 5Replace every bracketed placeholder — email address, return address, response time — and have the policy checked against consumer law where your customers are.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this comply with consumer law?
Not automatically. Many jurisdictions give consumers statutory rights that override your policy — a cooling-off period for distance selling, rights for faulty goods that survive any stated window. A policy that offers less than the statutory minimum is unenforceable on that point and may itself be unlawful. Get it checked for the markets you sell to.
What return window should I choose?
At least the statutory minimum where you sell, and then a commercial decision. Longer windows correlate with higher conversion and, counter-intuitively, often lower return rates, because urgency to decide is part of what drives returns.
Can I refuse returns on custom or handmade items?
Often yes — personalised and made-to-order goods are commonly excluded from statutory cancellation rights, but the exemption is narrower than sellers assume and does not cover faulty goods. Pick the Handmade / Custom type and then verify the exclusions against your jurisdiction.
What about digital products?
Digital goods usually have their own rules, often turning on whether the customer consented to immediate delivery and waived a cancellation right. The Digital Products type reflects the common approach; the specifics need checking.
Why so many bracketed placeholders?
Because a return policy full of unreplaced placeholders is both useless and a bad signal to customers. Contact address, return address and response times are yours — the brackets are there to be obvious.
About Return Policy Generator
The Return Policy Generator produces a complete returns and refunds policy for six business types: what is and is not eligible, the returns process step by step, refund timing, and what a customer should do if a refund has not arrived.
A clear returns policy is a conversion tool as much as a legal document. Uncertainty about what happens if something does not fit is one of the larger friction points in online purchasing, and a policy that answers it plainly removes that hesitation.
The part to get right is eligibility. Listing what is not returnable, and why, prevents most returns disputes before they start — and it is also where the legal risk sits, because statutory consumer rights in many jurisdictions override whatever your policy says. Rights around faulty goods in particular typically survive any window you state.
Replace every bracketed placeholder before publishing, and have the policy reviewed against consumer law in the markets you sell to. A policy offering less than the statutory minimum is not just unenforceable on that point, it can be an offence in itself.
