How to Use Report Card Comment Generator
- 1Enter the student's first name, or leave it blank and the comments will use '[Student]' for you to fill in.
- 2Pick the overall tone: Excellent / Exceeding, Positive / Meeting Expectations, or Needs Improvement.
- 3Describe the overall performance concretely — 'strong in reading comprehension, participates actively in discussions, struggles with written assignments'.
- 4Add key strengths and areas for improvement as short lists. These are what stop the comment being generic.
- 5Click 'Generate Comments'. You get three versions — short (2–3 sentences), medium (4–5) and detailed (6–8) — so you can match whatever space your reporting system allows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why three lengths?
Because reporting systems differ wildly — some give you a 300-character box, some expect a paragraph per subject. Generating all three means you're not rewriting to fit after the fact.
Does it avoid the usual filler phrases?
It's told to avoid vague phrasing like 'tries hard' and to be specific instead. The specificity comes from your input though: if the strengths field says 'good student', the comment will be about as useful as that.
Does it mention grades or other students?
Neither, deliberately. Numbers appear elsewhere on the report, and comparisons to classmates are inappropriate in a report card comment. Each comment ends with a forward-looking statement instead.
Should I put a student's full name or any sensitive details in?
Use a first name only, and don't enter anything confidential — SEN diagnoses, safeguarding information, family circumstances or anything else you wouldn't put in an unencrypted email. Nothing you type is stored here, but the general rule for pupil data and third-party AI tools is to keep it out.
Do I still need to edit the comment?
Yes, and read it against the child you're describing. Report comments are read closely by parents, and a sentence that's true of the class but not of this student is the one they'll notice.
About Report Card Comment Generator
Report card comments take a long time because each one has to be specific, honest, and readable by a parent — and there are thirty of them. The Report Card Comment Generator produces three versions of the same comment at different lengths from a description of how the student is doing.
The quality of the output tracks the specificity of your input almost exactly. 'Strong in reading comprehension, participates actively, struggles with written assignments' produces a comment a parent learns something from. 'Doing fine' produces a comment that could belong to anyone, which is the thing report comments are most criticised for.
Three constraints are built in: no reference to other students, no grades or numbers, and a forward-looking sentence at the end of each version. The tone setting changes how growth areas are framed — as opportunities in a positive report, honestly but supportively in one that needs to name real difficulties.
Two cautions. Keep pupil data out: a first name is enough, and diagnoses, safeguarding details and family circumstances should not be typed into any third-party AI tool. And always read the comment against the actual child before it goes out — parents read these closely, and a sentence that doesn't fit is the one they'll ask about. Your input goes to our own AI server over HTTPS, is used once, and is never stored or used for training. If our server is down, a backup AI provider may handle the request under its own data policy.
