Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the rate. At 8.25%, a $100 item has $8.25 of tax, so you pay $108.25. In general, total = price × (1 + rate ÷ 100).
How do I take sales tax out of a total?
Divide by 1 plus the rate, don't subtract the percentage. $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00 before tax, so the tax was $8.25. Taking 8.25% off $108.25 would give $99.32, which is wrong.
Which states have the highest sales tax?
Counting average local taxes, as of July 2026: Louisiana (10.13%), Tennessee (9.61%), Washington (9.57%), Arkansas (9.48%) and Alabama (9.46%). California has the highest statewide rate at 7.25%, or about 9.03% with local taxes on average.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Many Alaska boroughs and cities add their own (about 1.82% on average), and some Montana resort areas charge a resort tax.
Why doesn't the state rate match my receipt?
Cities, counties and special districts add their own sales taxes, so the rate depends on exactly where the sale happens, usually the delivery address for online orders. The calculator starts from the state's population-weighted average; enter your exact rate for a precise figure.
Is sales tax charged on groceries and clothing?
It depends on the state. Many states exempt groceries or tax them at a lower rate, most exempt prescription medicine, and a few exempt clothing. Check your state revenue department's list for the item you're buying.
About Sales Tax Calculator
This sales tax calculator adds sales tax to a price or takes it out of a total for any US state. Each state's rate starts as its statewide rate plus the population-weighted average of local rates, from the Tax Foundation's midyear 2026 table, and you can type your exact local rate.
Use it for one price or a list of items with quantities, for example to check a receipt or prepare an invoice. It shows the working, so you can see why removing tax means dividing by 1 plus the rate rather than subtracting a percentage.
Rates change and some items are taxed differently, so treat the averages as a guide and check your city's or state's own rate for exact amounts.
