What types of photos work best?
Photos of people work best: the model was trained mainly on portraits and full-body shots. Products and pets with a clear outline usually work too. Busy backgrounds and fine detail like flyaway hair can leave rougher edges.
Does the image get sent to a server?
No. The AI model runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your photo never leaves your device. Only the model itself is downloaded.
Can I replace the background with a colour?
Yes. After the cut-out, choose white, black or any custom colour and download it as a JPG or PNG. Keep it transparent to get a PNG you can place over anything.

ORMBG (Open Remove Background Model) by Benjamin Schirrmacher, released under the Apache-2.0 open-source licence, run with Microsoft's ONNX Runtime.
About Background Remover
Removing a background used to mean a graphics editor, a steady hand and a lot of time. This tool cuts the subject out of a photo automatically, with no manual selection, no sign-up and no upload.
It runs ORMBG, an open-source IS-Net segmentation network, in your browser using ONNX Runtime on WebAssembly. The model marks which pixels belong to the subject, and everything else becomes transparent at your photo's full resolution (very large photos are processed at up to 4096 px on the long side).
The model downloads the first time you use the tool and your browser keeps it, so later runs start straight away. Because everything happens on your device, your photos stay private.
