Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard tip percentage?

In the US, 15–20% is the standard tip for restaurant service. 18% is common for average service, 20% for good service, and 25%+ for exceptional service. For other services like taxis, hairdressers, and hotel staff, 15% is typical.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Both are acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct — you're tipping on the service, not the government's cut. However, tipping on the total (including tax) is common and simpler. The difference is usually small.

How does the bill splitting work?

The total (bill + tip) is divided equally among the number of people. Each person pays the same amount regardless of what they individually ordered. For more complex splits where people pay for their own items, calculate the tip percentage first and add it to each person's individual share.

What does 'Round up' do?

Rounding up sets the total to the next whole dollar amount. This makes cash payments easier and slightly increases the effective tip percentage. For example, a $47.60 total rounded up becomes $48.00, with the extra $0.40 going to the tip.

About Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator takes the mental arithmetic out of paying restaurant bills and splitting costs with friends. Enter the bill, choose your tip percentage, and set the number of diners — the calculator instantly shows the tip amount, total bill, and exact per-person share.

The preset tip buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) cover the most common tipping scenarios. The slider and custom input field let you fine-tune to any percentage. The round-up option is particularly convenient for cash payments — it rounds the total to the nearest dollar, making change easier while slightly increasing the tip.

Bill splitting is handled correctly for any number of people, from solo diners to large groups. The per-person calculation divides the full total (including tip) equally. This works well for groups who are comfortable splitting evenly — the most common approach for groups of friends dining together.

The copy summary button generates a shareable text summary of the calculation, useful for group chats when coordinating payment at a restaurant or telling people what they owe via message. The tip calculator is also useful beyond restaurants — for taxi rides, hotel housekeeping, salon services, food delivery, and any service where a gratuity is customary.
