Three ways to make your signature

Draw works best on a phone or tablet with a finger or stylus; with a mouse, go slowly and it'll look more like your hand. Type turns your name into a handwriting-style signature, and suits forms where a recognisable signature isn't the point. Upload is the closest to your real signature: sign a blank sheet of white paper, take a well-lit photo, and the tool removes the paper so only the ink is left on the PDF.

Whichever you use, the signature is placed as a picture you can move and resize, and dark ink on a white page prints cleanly. Blue ink is a good choice when you want it obvious which copy was signed.

Before you send a signed PDF

Check that every page with a signature line has been signed, that the date is on it if the document asks for one, and that you've filled in any boxes beside the signature, such as your printed name. Then open the downloaded file once to make sure the signature sits where you meant it to.

The saved file records in its properties that it was edited here, as desktop PDF editors do. If the document has form fields, the PDF Editor can fill them in before you sign, and it can also redact anything you shouldn't be sending.

  • PDF Editor: fill in form fields, change text or redact details before signing.
  • PDF Compressor: make the signed file small enough for an email or an upload form.
  • PDF Merger: put the signed pages back together with the rest of a document.

How to Use Sign PDF

  1. 1Drop the PDF you need to sign into the upload area.
  2. 2The signature box opens by itself. Draw your signature with a mouse, finger or stylus; type your name and pick an ink colour for a handwriting-style signature; or upload a photo of your signature on white paper, and the paper is made see-through.
  3. 3Your signature lands on the page. Drag it onto the signature line and drag the small square at its corner to make it bigger or smaller.
  4. 4Need initials or a second signature? Click Sign again. Add the date or your printed name with Add text, and tick boxes with Tick.
  5. 5Click Save & download to get the signed PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a signature added this way legally binding?

For many everyday documents, yes. Laws such as the US ESIGN Act and the EU's eIDAS regulation say a signature can't be refused just because it's electronic, so a signed PDF is accepted for things like offer letters, tenancy forms and order confirmations. Some documents need more: wills, deeds, some property and court papers, or anything where the other side asks for a certificate-based signature. If you're not sure, ask whoever asked you to sign.

Is this a digital signature?

No. It places a picture of your signature on the page, which is an electronic signature. A digital signature is a certificate-based seal that proves the file hasn't changed since it was signed, and this tool doesn't add one. If the PDF already carries a digital signature, any change to it, signing included, means that signature will no longer verify; the editor warns you when it opens such a file.

Can I sign more than one page, or add initials?

Yes. Click Sign as many times as you need: each signature is a separate copy you can drag to its own page and position. For an initials box, use the Type tab and type your initials. Anything you've placed can still be moved, resized or deleted until you save.

Is my signature saved anywhere?

No. It's made fresh each time and only exists in this page until you save the PDF; it isn't stored in your browser or sent anywhere, so nobody using the same computer later can reuse it.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser; the file is never uploaded to a server, so it stays on your device.

About Sign PDF

Sign PDF adds your signature to any PDF without printing and scanning it. Drop the file in, make your signature by drawing, typing or uploading a photo of it, place it on the line, add the date if you need it, and download the signed copy.

It runs on the same engine as the PDF Editor, so everything happens in your browser: the document and your signature never leave your device, and the PDF's own text stays as it was.
