Frequently Asked Questions

What is removed?

The document information (title, author, subject, keywords, the software that made it and the dates), the XMP metadata packet (a second copy of much of that, plus editing history), metadata streams attached to individual pages and images, and private application data that programs such as Illustrator store in the file. Leftover objects from earlier edits are dropped too.

Does it change the document?

No. Pages, text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields are all kept. Only the hidden information goes.

Why can't I add a password here?

Encrypting PDFs properly isn't something we can do reliably in a browser. Adobe Acrobat, Preview on macOS and LibreOffice all add passwords that every PDF reader recognises.

Can I clean a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. A password-protected PDF is encrypted, and the tool tells you so instead of producing a broken file. Open it in your PDF viewer with the password, use Print → Save as PDF to make an unprotected copy, and use that.

About PDF Metadata Remover

PDFs carry more than their pages: the author's name, the company's software, when the file was made and edited, sometimes the original file name. The Metadata Remover shows what your PDF says about itself, then removes it before you share the file.

It clears the document information and the XMP packet, which many tools forget, and also metadata attached to individual pages and images, which almost all of them miss. Objects left over from earlier edits, which can still hold an old author name, are dropped as well. The result lists exactly what was removed.

Everything happens in your browser, so the document you're cleaning is never uploaded anywhere. For password protection, use Adobe Acrobat, Preview on macOS or LibreOffice.
