Frequently Asked Questions
Can I skip the cover page?
Yes. Choose 'All but the first (cover)'. Numbering then starts on page 2, at the number you choose. For anything else, choose 'Choose pages' and type a range such as '3-20'.
Can I start from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set 'Start at' to any number, which is handy when the PDF is one chapter of a longer document. In the '1 / 10' formats the total counts from your starting number.
Will numbers be in the right place on rotated pages?
Yes. Position is worked out from each page as you see it, so numbers sit at the bottom of a page even if it's stored sideways.
Can I number a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. A password-protected PDF is encrypted, and the tool tells you so instead of producing a broken file. Open it in your PDF viewer with the password, use Print → Save as PDF to make an unprotected copy, and use that.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser; the file is never uploaded to a server, so it stays on your device.
About Add Page Numbers to PDF
Add Page Numbers puts page numbers on a PDF in a few clicks: for reports, theses, manuals, court bundles and anything printed and stapled. Choose one of six positions, a format, the starting number and which pages to number.
Numbers are added as real text in Helvetica, so they print sharply and stay searchable. The tool takes each page's crop box and rotation into account, so numbers land in the same place on every page. Everything runs in your browser with pdf-lib, and nothing is uploaded.
