Why Cost Estimation Matters

Accurate material cost estimation prevents budget overruns, helps you get competitive quotes from suppliers, and ensures your project stays on schedule. Even a 10% error on a large project can mean thousands of dollars in unexpected costs.

The Estimation Process

  1. Create a Bill of Quantities (BOQ) — List every material needed
  2. Specify quantities — In standard units (bags, m², m³, kg)
  3. Research current prices — Get quotes from at least 3 suppliers
  4. Add contingency — Typically 10–15% for unknowns

Common Material Categories

  • Structural: cement bags, sand (m³), gravel (m³), rebar (kg or bundles)
  • Masonry: bricks, blocks, mortar
  • Finishes: tiles (m²), paint (litres), plaster bags
  • Plumbing & electrical: pipes (m), wire (m), fittings

Practical Tips

  • Always add 5–10% wastage on top of calculated quantities
  • Price cement in 50 kg bags (approximately 28 bags per m³ of concrete)
  • Get bulk pricing for large quantities — can save 15–20%
