Why Your Electricity Bill Is Hard to Predict

Electricity bills depend on how many devices you run, for how long, and your tariff rate (cost per kWh). By adding up each appliance, you can predict your bill with surprising accuracy.

The Simple Formula

Monthly kWh = (Watts × Daily Hours × 30) ÷ 1000

Then multiply by your tariff rate (e.g. $0.12/kWh) to get the cost.

Common Appliance Wattages

  • Air conditioner (1.5-ton): ~1500W
  • Refrigerator: ~150W
  • Ceiling fan: ~75W
  • LED TV (43"): ~80W
  • Washing machine: ~500W
  • Water pump (0.5 HP): ~375W
  • LED bulb: ~9W

Example Calculation

Running an AC (1500W, 8h/day) for a month:

1500 × 8 × 30 ÷ 1000 = 360 kWh/month

At $0.12/kWh: $43.20/month just for the AC.
